Stone of the Anointing
“And in the meantime they carefully wrapped him, together with spices and myrrh, in a new linen cloth, that had never been used by anyone.” (Apocryphal Gospel of Gamiliel)
On entering the church, directly ahead is the Stone of the Anointing (or Unction), in memory of the piety of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, who prepared Jesus’ body for burial. Passion, Crucifixion and Anointing
Highly venerated by the Orthodox, it is decorated with candlesticks and lamps.
A mosaic on the inner wall depicts the scene.
